Anyone know how switching fro Insider to RTM works?

I know nothing has been said yet, but I would like to know. Will we get the start menu in the taskbar like Windows 7 and 8 do? Will there be a button in Windows Update? Will we have to do it manually?

I'm sure the "Get Windows 10" app will notify us when the upgrade is ready to install.

From what I understand the upgrade will be automatic. To drop out of the Insider program all you have to do is log out of the MSA that you signed up with.

If you want a full Windows 10 license, you are supposed to drop out of the Insider program, and re-install an older OS that qualifies for the upgrade.

You can choose to stay in the Insider program, and continue to receive Win 10 versions that don't have permanent licenses.

Only if you did a clean install of Windows 10.

The following is just an opinion. It sounds like you can opt-out of the insider program and keep the upgraded versions without having to roll back, provided you already upgraded from windows 7 or 8.1. license. Sorry if I misunderstood the question.

Yeah, I guess that's it. Loss of reading comprehension (mine) is a terrible thing. I'm probably still hung up over the free license issue. (It's irrelevant to me. I have all of the licenses that I require for my 3 Windows devices.)

I haven't checked whether the WIn 10 previews keep track of whether they were installed over a licensed copy of 7 or 8, but it may well be true.

My latest experiment was installing 10147 as an upgrade over 8.1. No license key was required. On a previous clean installation of 10147, a key was needed to permit it to be activated.

If memory serves, the Settings button to opt out of the Insiders program is present but nonfunctional on 10147. I suppose that it'll work on the RTM version.

So I have to go from Windows 10 (TP) to Windows 8.1 and then back to Windows 10 (RTM)?

I did some upgrading testing. This is going to be hard to explain.

I deleted the pid.txt
Upgraded form windows 7 home oem to windows 10 preview, change to a different key
Upgraded form windows 7 home retail to windows 10 preview, it change to a key but the same key that it change the oem to.

I was using build 10130 as a test.

If I read the blog post correctly:

If your Win 10 TP version was installed as an upgrade over Window 8.1, no. (I presume that extends through a sequence of upgrades through the chain if Insider releases.)

If you clean installed, yes, you'll need to revert to 8.1.
